A rare and exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Manager of Operations - Market Gardens to be part of the team at Pialligo Estate in Canberra. The Manager of Operations Market Gardens will be responsible for the production of high quality fruit, heirloom vegetables, herbs and spices within the 55 acre property which includes a 6 year old stone fruit orchard, significant root vegetable plot, 500 tree olive grove and large herb garden as well as some emerging plots within the Estate which will be used to grow new product. The role will report to and work closely with the Estate General Manager and Executive Chef to review current produce, suggest new ideas and explore ways to make the estate self-sufficient and utilise excess produce. The role suits an experienced, hands-on Kitchen Gardener who is self-motivated, confident, has the ability to come up with new ideas and work both independently as well as within a team. Key Responsibilities Growing and care of produce for use in the Pialligo Estate kitchens and consumption by customers in a timely and efficient manner Growing of soft, hard and exotic fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, salad greens and micro greens Propagation of new produce and exploring native species Suggesting ideas for new produce, growing techniques and overall improvements Exploring and suggesting ideas for utilising any excess produce Sourcing good quality and fairly priced materials Regular meetings with the Estate General Manager and Executive Chef regarding availability and seasonality of produce Production of a weekly report to be sent to the Estate General Manager Upkeep, ongoing maintenance, cleanliness and development of all growing areas Liaison with Pialligo Estate maintenance staff regarding equipment repairs and servicing Awareness of and compliance with Health & Safety requirements and legislation. Candidate requirements 5 years/seasons experience, preferably consecutively, in all phases & facets of growing fruit and vegetables (commercial and/or market gardening) A strong understanding of growing principles and practices including soil structure, composting, weed & pest management Experience as well as a good grasp of the mechanical principles of wide variety of equipment operation/usage and light repair & maintenance Excellent communication skills Organisational skills Stable, physically fit, well balanced, intuitive, level headed problem solving attitude.
